The Perseverance rover has completed the collection of the second Martian sample, indicating the long-term existence of water on Mars!

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover successfully collected its first sample on September 6th, which the research team called "Montdenier".On September 8th, two days later, the Perseverance collected a second sample from the same rock and named it "Montagnac".

  • The selected rock is nicknamed "Rochette" by NASA. The above picture is taken during the first sampling, and the following picture is taken during the second sampling

The length of these two samples is about 6cm, with a diameter slightly wider than a pencil, and they are currently stored in sealed tubes inside the Mars rover. The Perseverance spacecraft is equipped with a total of 43 sample tubes, and scientists plan to search for multiple rocks and collect their cores, hoping to bring them back to Earth during the Mars 2026 mission.

  • After completing the collection task on August 6th, the Perseverance spacecraft took this photo to confirm the successful sampling of "Montdenier"

Scientists have determinedLochte "is a block of basalt, which means it may represent cooling lava flowing along the surface of this red planet. In addition, the Perseverance spacecraft has detected salt in two samples. NASA suggests that these compounds may have been formed from groundwater flowing through rocks or evaporated surface water. Moreover, salt may lock in tiny water bubbles during crystal formation, but this remains to be confirmed when the samples are brought back to Earth.

The Perseverance rover has taken a big step forward in the field of Mars exploration, and we look forward to it completing the collection of all samples as soon as possible! Looking forward to the Mars 2026 mission carrying our name and launching soon!
